North of Stillwater, in the Osceola area, there is the ArtBarn, a beautifully restored barn that now houses a community theater and art gallery. Currently it is open during the spring, summer and fall. Just down the river is the St. Croix Festival Theater in St. Croix Falls. The St.Croix is a top notch theater drawing on theater professionals from throughout the country. Their season runs from July through December in theatrical excursions into comedy, drama, and mysteries.
As you wind down the road, there is an interesting experiment called Franconia Sculpture Park. Artists have been invited to create large sculptures that they could not create in their own studios, and to give them an opportunity to address creative ideas. Look for the works on the east side of the road as you are traveling south on highway 95 from Taylors Falls. As you near Stillwater, there are many artists living in the surrounding communities of Marine and Afton. Some of these artists are highlighted in a new Stillwater Art Guild Gallery located in downtown Stillwater on Union Alley. This gallery specializes in the ability to buy directly from the artist.
Stillwaters first Fine Arts Gallery is the Tamarack Gallery on south Main Street. They have a wide variety of art that also focuses on local and regional artists. The Kelly Galleries have three art galleries. One on Main Street Stillwater, another in downtown Hudson, and another in Woodbury. A little gem of a gallery is the Dorothy Berge Gallery located on Myrtle Street up the hill from the post office. Dorothy Berge is the proud curator and creator of the gallery, which shows local and regional artists in a cozy home-like setting.
Across the river is the beautiful Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin. The Phipps features five different art galleries, a gorgeous theater, and several classrooms. They are the Valleys cornerstone for quality art productions. In downtown Stillwater, look for art displays in area businesses. As awareness of art grows, the draw of fine art is continually showcased. Northern Vineyards and the Dreamcoat Cafe has ongoing shows of art. Even the newly renovated River Market Community Food Co-op has a colorful new mural by local artist Edie Abnet. The River Valley Arts Council is the common link between area galleries and artists. Their new office is in the Loome Antiquarian Bookstore Building on the corner of Chestnut and Main Streets, Stillwater. Look for the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce signs and the Art Council is in the same building, on the second floor.
