Stillwater Dining

Stillwater, Minnesota With Duncan Hines’ pronouncement in a 1941 Life Magazine that the Lowell Inn was one of his special favorites, the name “Stillwater” became synonymous with the concept of civilized dining.

“The Mount Vernon of the West...Your Haven for Food and Rest.” So goes the Lowell Inn tagline. With menus featuring Lamb and Prime Steak, we can’t argue with 31 consecutive Travel Holiday Magazine Dining Awards. The Lumber Baron’s Queen Victoria Restaurant is also a contender for your reservations. This historic landmark features traditional American Cuisine and must-have sweets like “the Baronette” – a rich chocolate torte with raspberry sauce.

Savories on North Main Street serves food which leaves you satisfied - but not overstuffed, according to a 1999/2000 Zagat Survey. Owner/chefs Jeff and Kristin Klemetsrud have modeled this little gem into a wonderful place for cozy tete-a-tetes with your best friend.

A stroll down to the riverfront will bring you to the Dock Cafe. Designed by local architect Mike McGuire, and decorated with ethnographic textiles, you’ll find the menu consistently fresh. The Dock Cafe is a great place to take friends and co-workers.
“Best BBQ Ribs” is only one of the many “bests” Famous Dave’s is boasting about these days. Here’s a great spot to let the kids stretch out and fill up with barbeque and fixins. Speaking of casual, the Mad Capper, known for their huge sandwiches and hat collection, also has free popcorn while you wait. Across the street at Brine’s, you’ll find daily bar specials like buck-a-burger Monday nights.

A great spot for an after work or after play visit is Esteban’s in the Brick Alley Building. Esteban’s offers the best margaritas in town and spicy platters of TexMex eats. Broadway Pizza, across from Cub Foods, will soon be at the top of your phone list. Their delicious pizzas are loaded with fresh ingredients. The deli at River Market Co-op is perfect for putting together a picnic in the park.

Maybe it’s the Scandinavian in us Minnesotans, but heaven knows we have our fair share of coffee spots in town! Newest is the Dreamcoat Cafe, where the macaroons and hamitashen are enough to make you swoon. The Supreme Bean, offers a sunny atmosphere and delicious drink that makes you feel at home. Newspapers to read, goodies to eat, a quick and friendly smile. Long-timer Kelly at the Daily Grind makes a mean latte as well!

The Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter is home to live accordion music on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Wash it down with imported Munich beer, wines and liquor. As long as you’re out and about, drive down to Afton to visit with Laine at Selma’s. She’s brought out a whole new menu. If you want something more formal, walk over to the Afton House where visitors are welcome for lunch or dinner.
